Biology Day at Heworth CLC

Today our Year 10 Biology students are at Heworth City Learning Centre recording some exciting - and educational - tv and radio shows.

This morning we have had the 'Jeremy Kingston Show' discussing the medical arguments around the use of cannabis. Same topic has also been discussed on the THS Surgery.

Update from our Year 9 sunscreen project which was a great success!

During the project 14 Year 9 students worked alongside Susan Jenkins from Macmillan Cancer Research and Anne Willis and Dr Kay Padget from the University of Northumbria. The project aimed to raise the awareness of the dangers associated with not using sunscreen. It also required the students to research and analyse some of the effects of ultra-violet light on the skin and the effectiveness of sunscreens. Photo's coming soon!

Environmental Project - Sweden!

Mr Manns and Mrs Carter are taking 11 Year 9 pupils to Kunskapsskolan in Sweden in June. Our pupils are currently completing an Environmental project which they will present to peers in Sweden when we join up to work with pupils from Mortimer College and will commence a collaborative project on Global warming and rising sea levels in Sweden.

Science Club Update

Science Club continues with Mr Castling after school on Wednesday evenings. Pupils from Key Stage 3 are working on producing Science Videos and Pod casts, making sure to enter competitions as they go. Coming soon is Cowboy Mentos!

Sun Worshiper - No Respector Project

Mr Manns and Mr Carlton have started the "Sun Worshiper - No respecter" project that won a grant (of £2000) form the Royal Society of Chemistry with our top set Year 9s. The pupils will be awarded a Bronze Crest Award. This is an externally awarded achievement in recognition of their commitment to Science during the project.

Mrs Collin continues to spend Wednesday afternoons in one of our feeder primary schools delivering Science to Key Stage 2 pupils either raising standards in preparation for national tests or working with the pupils on new practical skills in Science.

Master Classes!

Approximately 15 of our Year 11 pupils participated in a master class at Newcastle or Northumbria University, gaining a taste of uni life and some pupils who attended the Medical Science class even got to take blood from another person! These pupils gave up their Saturday mornings to take part in this project!

National Science Week 2009

Thomas Hepburn hosted another successful Science Showcase at the Metrocentre where pupils from primary, secondary and special schools demonstrate their understanding and enjoyment in Science. Not forgetting the famous Starlab which always attracts interest from pupils and the public. Pupils from Carr Hill Primary participated in an actual science lesson in the middle of the Metrocentre. Also represented at the event were local Universities and Beamish Museum.

Greenies is still going strong on Monday Lunchtimes attracting pupils from both Key stages. Pupils work in the greenhouse and are looking forward to giving out the flowers they have grown.

Several Key Stage 3 Pupils have just sent of another batch of letters to our link school in Tanzania. Mrs Collin is working with the pupils at further establishing the link as part of seeking International School Award status in the future.

Wow Space Report by Robynne Coble

The WOW space bus is in town, and the Gateshead CLC has been propelled into the Milky Way! This morning our young space explorers, aged 4-6, have been rocketing through some interstellar activities. They’ve been making loads of astronomical paper rockets and blasting them off across the car park. The winners got a cool pen to wear around their necks. Next they were off to the astounding planetarium to look at our stellar solar system. Inside, the other explorers were doing two different activities. One group was using the funky Bee-Bots, travelling through the universe via a magic carpet (Not really, it’s just a mat on the floor)! On the other side of the spaced out room, the rest of our space explorers were being artistic! They made some astromazing space scenes. So far it’s been an amazing day, so good it seems extra terrestrial!
